Sedibeng EMS Department brings joy to Samanco Children and the Staff

EMS Department contributes to Kotulong Centre

The donations were accepted by the staff and kids at the Kotulong Centre

Amid a chilling winter cold, members of the Sebokeng-based Emergency Municipal Services (EMS) gave a sigh of bliss to the HIV-aids-infected children at the Kotulong Centre, formerly Samanco centre.

The centre was started at the Sebokeng EMS by Mathapelo Mokoena, an HIV-Aids positive person and also peer-educator about the disease. While educating the children on on first aid she discovered the unsatisfactory conditions faced by people, particularly children living with HIV.

It was at this time that she saw the need to make a contribution with basics like clothes and food. She maintains that: 'People living with HIV also need love, proper shelter, care and the right to live without discrimination,' adding that: 'people with HIV must know that anti-retrovirals are helpful.'

Mathapelo is not alone in her efforts, she enjoys the support of her colleagues who occasionally do outreach programme as part of their social responsibility. Staffers at the Sebokeng Emergency Municipal Services that includes the station commander David Mtshotwane, training-instructors Popi Kgotlagomang and Craig Baatjes, union representative Zandi Mateki as well as Sedibeng District Municipality's HIV/AIDS co-ordinator Athilia Mbulaheni all made their contribution on the day.

Commenting about the effort, Tebogo Moteane says: 'We have challenges relating to a feeding and clothing the fourty-seven kids. The predicament is made worse by the fact that the centre has no funders to assist financially or otherwise.'
'The big challenge is that children are infected and are required to vacate the centre as soon as they turn eighteen and above,' adds Phindile Mokona a child and youth-care worker.

The centre's acting manager Tebogo Moteane as well as the child and youth-care worker Phindile Mokona expressed thankfulness for the great contribution made by employees of the EMS.
