Memorial Lecture
Minister of Justice & Constitutional Development, Jeff Radebe will deliver a talk with the objective of sharing the memories and interpretations as well as the political significance of the Sharpeville Massacre and the struggle for human rights.

The importance of understanding and propagating the concept of human rights will be a central theme in this event.

The event will also honour and remember heroes and heroines of the Sharpeville massacre, their contribution to the struggle against apartheid.

Imbawula Story Telling - Ratanda
The survivors of the Sharpeville massacre will sit around imbawulas and tell stories about the events and how they unfolded on that fateful day in March 1960. The stories of how the families of the victims were effected and how the community at large struggled to get justice till this day.

The Khulumani Support Group which represents the survivors of this and other massacres will partner the Municipalities in bringing these stories to life in the streets of Ratanda in Hiedelberg.

The stories of how the families of the victims were effected and how the community at large struggled to get justice till this day. The Khulumani Support Group which represents the survivors of this and other massacres will partner the Municipalities in bringing these stories to life in the streets of Sharpeville on the 11 of March.

Human Rights Carnival
This event focusses on celebrating the launch of the Human Rights Month and the cultural diversity of our region. Carnival floats, dancing groups and marching troops will be the order of the day. The streets of Sharpeville will be transformed into a kaleidoscope of colour and costumes.

Young and old are welcome to enjoy the street procession which starts at Sharpeville Precinct and ends at the Dhlomo Dam where the crowds will enjoy a host of cultural performances by various cultural groups.

Puisano Jazz Festival
The promotion and development of local musicians is seen as one of the key functions of the of the Puisano Jazz Festival. The wealth of talent and their obvious potential to develope into world class performers needs to be nurtured.

The Jazz Festival will feature no less than 15 Jazz bands that have been selected from preliminary rounds and so the crowds are guaranteed to be entertained by the best the Jazz world has to offer.

Bring along your camping chairs and enjoy a pick-nick with family and friends.

Human Rights Fair
The aim of the Fair is to promote awareness of the importance of Human Rights and to highlight it’s significance from both a historical and current day perspective.

Activities such as exhibitions, story telling, oral accounts from survivors of the massacre and tours of the human rights precinct in sharpeville will form part of the fair. Entertainment by local artists and crafter’s wears will also be part of the bouquet of events. Schools as well as individuals are encouraged to visit the fair and take advantage of the wealth of knowledge and entertainment on offer.

Cleaning of the Graves
An annual event where victims and or survivors of the 1960 massacres together with local leadership get together to perform a ceremonial cleaning of graves.

The ceremony is always blessed by the attendance of priests and religiuos leaders from Sharpeville as well the families of the survivors of the Sharpeville Massacre.

A short prayer service is followed by an acknowledgment of the victims and their sacrifices by the Executive Mayor.

Candle Lighting
Sedibeng District Municipality in partnership with the Khulumani Support group and other religious groups from Sharpeville and the surrounding areas, invite you to this ceremonial Candle Lighting procession where they will be remembering the night before the 21 March 1960.

An address by the political leadership of Sedibeng at Dhlomo dam will be followed by a prayer service hosted in memory of the fallen heroes and heroines of the Sharpeville massacre. The procession will start at the Seliba Primary School to Kwa- Dhlomo dam - Shapeville.

Photo Exhibition
A mobile exhibition of photos taken on the 21 March 1960 will be available for public viewing. A photographic account presented through the eye of Dr. Peter Magubane who was present at the massacre.

The exhibition will be complemented by object collected from survivors and archive material from both Constitutional Hill and the Hector Peterson Memorial. This visual account of the events on that fateful day should not be missed by anyone seeking a better understanding of the tragedy. The display will be housed at the Human Rights Fair which be at Rhoda Yende Hall in Sebokeng and will be moved to other venues from time to time.

Human Rights 4 Nations Soccer Tournament
The countries favourite sport will get an all important boost when the 2010 Soccer World Cup kicks off in June this year. The fans in the Sedibeng region can now enjoy a soccer spectacle of their own. An under 20 soccer tournament makes it’s second appearance on the Human Rights Festival calendar.

This year national under 20 teams from 3 African countries will pit themselves against our very own South African under 20 team. This will be a joint venture between SAFA and the Sedibeng District Municipality. Fans can look forward to great soccer during this event.

The survivors of the Sebikeng massacre will sit around imbawulas and tell stories about the events and how they unfolded on that fateful day on the 26 March 1990. The stories of how the families of the victims were effected and how the community at large struggled to get justice till this day.

The Khulumani Support Group which represents the survivors of this and other massacres will partner the Municipalities in bringing these stories to life in Moshoeshoe street. Story telling has long been a means of recording history and the public is encouraged to participate in what might prove to be a life changing experience.

Hip Hop & Kwaito Festival
Sedibeng District Municipality will be hosting the Hip Hop & Kwaito Festival for the first time as an event during the Human rights festival at Shalima Ridge Stadium in Heidelberg. The programme will mainly target the youth of Sedibeng. Tickets will be sold at R 40.00 at Computicket and Checkers. The event will be used as platform to educate the youth on Human Rights issues and to ensure that the legacy of the struggle for rights is not lost in the new generation.

Artists that will perform on the day will include: Winnie Khumalo; Skwatta Kamp; Jub Jub; GP Gangsta & Bhabhalaz; Mzumbe; The Shack; Mgo and Zanele Tickets are available at Computicket and Checkers at R40.00 per person

Sedibeng Choral Music Festival
A partnership between the Sedibeng District Municipality and the Sedibeng Arts Initiative, under the direction and guidance of Mr. Fako Mokoena, a well-known and experienced choral leader in the Sedibeng community. The Sedibeng Choral Music Festival is entering its 8th successful year. Sedibeng District Municipality has been involved since its 2nd year.

The Choral Festival is a platform for developing choirs in the region and beyond, and also showcases some of the more established and leading choirs. Choirs from as far as Lesotho participate in this event on an annual basis. Sedibeng District Municipality is proud to be part of this prestigious event which promotes and develops arts and culture in the area, as well as to establish Sedibeng as one of the foremost choral music regions in the country.
