On the 25th May the Sedibeng District Municipality celebrated Africa Day.  Africa Day is the annual commemoration of May 25 of the 1963 founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU).  On this day, leaders of 30 of the 32 independent African states signed a founding charter in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The event was opened by the MMC of Sports, Recreation, Arts, Culture & Heritage, Mluleki Nkosi, after which the Executive Mayor Cllr. Mahole Simon Mofokeng, delivered a speech where he quoted the great American Scholar Dr Henry Clarke who said, “History tells a people where they are and what they are. Most important, an understanding of history tells a people where they still must go and what they still must be”

The day was celebrated with a host of music and dance performances, cultural food, fashion and craft exhibitions which were all staged at Constitutional Square in Vereeniging.
