Annually on June 17, the Sedibeng District Municipality commemorates the Boipatong Massacre of 1982. Apart from the yearly tradition of laying wreaths on graves, the families of our heroes and heroines were honoured by the long awaited unveiling of tombstones for their loved ones, by the Executive Mayor of the Sedibeng District Municipality, Cllr. The Executive Mayor, Cllr. Mahole Simon Mofokeng along with several religious dignitaries led the yearly custom in honouring the fallen heroes and heroines.  In his opening, he sighted the achievement of this venture as one of the committed 100 days projects by the Sedibeng District Municipality as a “final push to speedy service delivery”. In his address he deeply expressed how vital it was that the tribute of the Boipatong Massacre be supported by the Boipatong community, he then went on to tackle concerns raised by the community on building a memorial sight for their fallen heroes, stating that the project is already underway and will breaking ground in the near future.  The Honourable Mayor further said that, “the people of Boipatong must never forget that they stood firm for peace and unity during the ordeal of 1982, and that stance contributed in leading the people of the Vaal and South Africa to freedom.

After the commemoration event the Executive Mayor together with various Municipal delegates visited Mme Mmita, a survivor of the Boipatong Massacre. Mme Mmita is in a wheelchair and her house is in desperate need of renovation.
