| The Sedibeng District Municipality celebrated youth month by hosting a Youth Open Day on the 25th of June 2010. The event was held at Constitutional Square in Vereeniging. One of the main reasons for hosting such an event was to recognize and appreciate the contributions made by the youth to the Region and the country at large. “It is only fair that we take the time out as Sedibeng District Municipality to reflect and give credit where credit is so richly deserved. We may not only be self congratulatory in our approach, we also need to draw inspiration from the past leaders of the youth of our country, “said the Executive Mayor of Sedibeng”.
The Executive Mayor, Cllr. Mahole Simon Mofokeng also spoke about the historical journey experienced by Sedibeng and Soweto as he made reference to the 18th Anniversary of the Boipatong Massacre, the 50th Anniversary of the Sharpeville Massacre and 34th Anniversary of the Soweto Uprising. After reminding the youth about the importance of education he implored them to make use of the Youth Centres that have been set up across the district. These centres offer guidance to employment seekers and aspiring entrepreneurs as well as assisting with things such as computer and internet access and skills development programmes.
The main draw card for the day was the entertainment lineup. Popular Djs such as Dj D-Toy; Dj Pepsi and Dj Lamzim had the crowd on their feet. Appearances by Dj Batucada from Lesedi FM and local artist Sello Malete were the icing on the cake.
