On 10 November 2009 the United Nations General Assembly officially adopted Nelson Mandela’s birthday, 18 July, as Nelson Mandela International Day. This is the day on which South Africans and people around the world will spend 67 minutes - in honour of Mr. Mandela’s 67 year service to humanity - doing something good for other people. On that day, the Executive Mayor of Sedibeng District Municipality Cllr. Mahole Simon Mofokeng, Rivonia trialist Ahmed Kathrada and the community of Lakeside joined forces to offer their 67 minutes by cleaning the streets in the area.
In his address Mr. Kathrada expressed Madiba’s deepest wish that the young people of this country value the importance of education, he made an example of Dikgang Moseneke the current Deputy Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court, who at only 15 years old was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment on Robben Island but still managed educate himself attaining a matric certificate and a degree.
The Executive Mayor also touched on education, saying that the leaders of the apartheid struggle sacrificed so much in order that the younger generation may have a better education and enrich their lives. The Mayor went on to say about the people of Lakeside, “Lets us give the community of Block 6 the same pride we felt for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Let them feel that they also belong to this country, and most of all, let them feel that we care.”
The event was also attended by Members of the Mayoral Committee and Councillors.
