On the 28th July, the Sedibeng District Municipality held a District-wide Mayoral Imbizo at the Ratanda Multi-purpose centre in Lesedi. The Imbizo proved to be one the best attended municipal events and was also attended by Executive Mayors and Members of the Mayoral Committees as well as other high ranking officials from the Emfuleni, Midvaal and Lesedi Local Municipalities. Aimed at strengthening the Municipality's public participation processes, some of its key focus areas were:
- The challenges and achievements which were brought about by our hosting of the two International Soccer teams in our region during the Soccer World Cup
- The Mayor's 100 Days Projects announced earlier this year;
- Plans going forward and inviting inputs and proposals on how best can we improve on our working together partnership;
- To share with our communities service and plans that government offer.
In his key-note address, the Executive Mayor of Sedibeng District Municipality, mentioned amongst others important accomplishments in the last financial year such as:
- Hosting world cup teams, Switzerland and Ivory Coast, handing over our training stadiums in time for the 2010 FIFA World Cup and establishing public viewing areas, making it possible for the community to experience the world cup.
- Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Sharpeville Massacre and laying tombstones on the graves of the Boipatong massacre victims.
- The District was presented with four consecutive clean audits by the Auditor General, as a result of that the Sedibeng District was awarded the “The Ambassador of Clean Audits Award.”
- Together with Emfuleni, free basic electricity was provided to more than 9 000 households, a total amount of R21 million was spent on the electricity network and public lighting.
The Executive Mayor concluded by saying: “I believe that in partnership with our communities, we will indeed do more for the development of this beautiful region we all are proud to call our home. Our theme for this year, ‘Together with our Communities - A final push to speedy service delivery’ will and is fast becoming a reality.”
The Office of the Executive Mayor will be addressing and has prioritised the issues raised by the community at the Imbizo as part of the post Imbizo programme. Various avenues will be explored which will include but are not limited to Stakeholder Forums and attending to individual issues directly with complainants and community members.
