Sedibeng District Municipality, ArcellorMittal and the Department of Science and Technology, presented a Mobile Science Laboratory to the ArcellorMittal Science Centre in Sebokeng on Friday 5th November 2010.

The mobile lab which is funded by the Department of Science and Technology mainly services previously disadvantaged schools which lack proper laboratory infrastructure and expertise.  The mobile lab aims to provide hands-on, easy to grasp practical experience to learners as a means to stimulate them to take science, engineering and technology careers.

The mobile lab also seeks to offer curricular support to senior learners enabling them to have a better understanding of questions based on practical work in their exams. The lab will go to schools identified by the Department of Education in the Sedibeng District.  Learners who participate in this programme will be entered as potential applicants for the ArcellorMittal Bursary Scheme for the engineering field.

Sedibeng West District 8 Director – Jerry Bhagaloo said, “What we really need to now focus on is in the issue of quality education, we are looking to work with these learners from their junior high school stage right through to higher education and eventually qualification in the science and technology fields.”

The mobile laboratory comes as part of ArcellorMittal’s Corporate Social Investment programme which focuses on benefiting historically disadvantaged communities, their Science Centres in Sebokeng and Vanderbijlpark offer additional Mathematics, Science and English education to learners from schools in these areas.

The event was attended by Derek Hanekom – Deputy Minister of the Department of Science & Technology, The Executive Mayor of Sedibeng – Cllr. Simon Mahole Mofokeng, General Manager ArcellorMittal Coke & Chemicals – Funani Mojono, & Science Centre Manager – Thami Mphokela.
