Once again on 18 July 2019, the Nation will be celebrating the Nelson Mandela International Day and it is more than a celebration of Nelson Mandela’s life and legacy, it is a global movement to take his life’s work into a new era and change our world for the better. Mandela Day requires us all to “
Take Action; Inspire Change; Make Every Day a Mandela Day.”
Tata followed three rules throughout his life, which he did at great personal sacrifice such as: Free Yourself, Free Others, and Serve Every day.
Restoring dignity means we need to take action against poverty, and we have to work together to do that. Each of us can make everyday a Mandela Day, by choosing to do something sustainable that will help community members eradicate poverty and ensure we realise the ideal of a dignified life.
Sedibeng District Municipality is no exception in this contribution. On the 18th July 2019 the Executive Mayor Cllr Busisiwe Modisakeng in partnership with Gauteng MEC for Social Development Mr Nkabinde -Khawe and various stakeholders embarked on a life changing programmes.

- Cleaning of a Vereeniging Taxi Rank and road markings in the3 way inter-section between union street and commuters were delighted, one of them said “We appreciate the efforts made even though we are still facing challenges of lack of lights, issues of pothole, but it’s a start, it’s a sign we going somewhere as members of the Sedibeng community ” Mr Dambula from KwaMasiza said.
- A Youth headed household in Evaton where three children between the ages of 20 and 14 were donated with food parcels from Gauteng Department of Social Development, clothes from Thetha FM , groceries from Home Affairs and filled in a subsidy forms for house allocation which was a great stride.
- Old Age Home (Zone 13), the Grandmothers and grandfathers were pampered with manicures, and foot massages, done by the Sebokeng Technical school and the Executive Mayor offered a voucher of R1000.
- Our last stop was the Zinesimenye old age home in Duncanville. Gauteng Department of Social development, Old mutual, handed out food parcels, fruits, blankets and a cake for Puleng Mkhwanazi celebrating her 104 years of age.
Cllr. Busisiwe Modisakeng, Executive Mayor of Sedibeng District Municipality, stood up with the words “Yes we can” simply because the municipality believes in improving the lives of both children and parents. She furthermore said that “this is a time for reflection and making a difference in the world particularly to the residents of Sedibeng”. All stakeholders involved showed gratitude and were honoured to be a part of this memorable event.

Mandela Day asks us all to “Take action; Inspire Change; Make everyday a Mandela Day”. In the words of Tata Madiba, “It always seems impossible, until it’s done”. Sedibeng District Municipality made this day a possible success and showed common humanity. The municipality will continue to encourage more companies to make their good deeds on-going and sustainable, rather than just once off. 67 minutes of a lifetime.
