Sedibeng Hosts 2025 Annual National Archives Awareness Week

Sedibeng District Municipality, in partnership with Gauteng Provincial Archives and Records Services, hosted the 2025 Annual National Archives Awareness Week from 4 to 7 August 2025. The event, aligned with the International Council on Archives’ recommendations, aimed to promote the importance of proper records management and public access to archival services.

Activities included visits to Rusoord and Ramusukula High Schools, exposing learners to archival research methods, professional services, and exhibition curation. Local NGOs were also engaged to raise awareness about archives and records preservation. Delegates and attendees had opportunities to exchange knowledge on records management, archival legislation, and preservation of societal memory.

The initiative supports Sedibeng’s Integrated Development Plan (IDP) objectives on governance and accountability, by strengthening archives and records management practices across municipal departments and improving public access to information.

All logistics, including catering, were sourced from local service providers.

The event emphasized that maintaining proper archival records is a shared responsibility, supporting transparency, accountability, and the preservation of South Africa’s collective memory.
