Sedibeng District Municipality convened a two-day Multi-Party Lekgotla on 20 and 21 August 2026 under the theme "Enhancing Good Governance and Deepening Accountability." The engagement was coordinated through the Office of the Whip of Council, led by Whip of Council Cllr Mamohale Moloi, following a unanimous resolution of the Multi-Party Whippery for a broader forum beyond the constraints of ordinary Council sittings.
Coming as the current term draws to a close, the Lekgotla served as a close-out engagement — assessing institutional performance, identifying unresolved service-delivery challenges, and recording resolutions to guide the incoming administration.
Presentations covered MPAC's oversight work under Cllr Yusuf Mahomed, environmental and transport coordination, the Vereeniging Fresh Produce Market as a regional economic asset, and Human Settlements' funding and GIS challenges, alongside the EPWP, underutilised intermodal facilities, and licensing-centre infrastructure.
From these, twelve priorities emerged for the next administration, including: building institutional capacity through IGR enhancement and CoGTA secondments (with roughly 78% of the municipality's grant-dependent revenue currently spent on salaries); strengthening MPAC oversight and consequence management; establishing a single system for tracking Council resolutions; capacitating Human Settlements and GIS systems; revitalising the Fresh Produce Market and pursuing SEZ and Airport Development involvement; expanding EPWP; repurposing underused municipal assets; upgrading licensing-centre infrastructure; and strengthening financial management and ethical governance — including a resolve to pursue formal Section 154 adoption by CoGTA and SALGA.
The Office of the Whip of Council regards the Lekgotla as a key step toward deeper multi-party collaboration, keeping municipal priorities focused on communities across Sedibeng as a new administration prepares to take office.
