Cayman Road upgrade unlocks rural economic potential |

Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport Dr Ismail Vadi will officially opened Phase 2 of the 6.2kms of Cayman Road project valued at R28 million in the Midvaal Local Municipality, south east of Johannesburg. The stretch of road provides for easy access to the upmarket Eye of Africa Golf and Residential Estate.
Vadi said that the Cayman Road project was in line with the provincial government’s Programme of Action aimed at building a growing and inclusive economy as well as stimulating rural development. “The upgrading of Cayman Road provides public infrastructure to peri-urban areas; promotes economic growth by opening up job opportunities for rural communities and contributes to the improvement of quality of life,” emphasised Vadi.
The project included the construction of permanent bituminous surfaced road over a total distance of 6.2 kilometers and improving two traffic intersections at Cayman Road and Kliprivier Road (R550). The first phase covering two kilometres was carried out by Moseme Lonerock JV, promoting small and emerging contractors. The remaining 4.2 kilometers was completed recently by the Department’s Road Construction Unit.
Deputy Minister of Constitutional Development Andries Nel, graced the occasion and gave a succinct account of the inter-relationship between education, job creation, economic development and crime. Representing the Sedibeng District Municipality Mayor, Cllr Simon Mofokeng, Cllr Simon Maphalla expressed appreciation to the Gauteng Provincial Government for its support in infrastructure development in Sedibeng
The road upgrade will accommodate higher traffic volumes along the Eye of Africa development, comprising of a golf course, nature estate, commercial centre and residential units.
In its efforts to contribute to skills development and providing decent work through the project, the Department provided valuable training for its junior civil engineering technicians and engineers. Furthermore, five foremen, 33 operators, 36 road workers and six support personnel were part of the team involved in the project.
