The Chairperson of the MPAC, Councillor Yusuf Mahommed, along with the entire Committee, successfully hosted a three-day public hearing in accordance with Section 160(7) of the Constitution of South Africa and Section 79A of the Local Government: Municipal Structures Act 117 of 2008. The hearing focused on providing feedback about the management of municipal finances and reviewing the current UIF/W and oversight reports related to licensing facilities.
Key attendees included the Executive Mayor and various officials. MMCs responsible for Local Economic Development, Administration (Corporate Services), Transport and Infrastructure, Development and Planning, Human Settlement, and Environment and Clean Air were invited to address questions from the public. The active participation of the community made the public hearing highly successful, and residents requested consistent workshops to better understand the workings of municipal departments.
Public hearings play a critical role in fostering transparency, accountability, and citizen involvement in governance. They create a platform for the community to express concerns, ask questions, and provide feedback on essential issues such as financial management and service delivery. The community's call for regular workshops underscores the importance of civic education, empowering citizens to engage meaningfully in municipal matters and strengthening the relationship between the local government and its residents.
