- Director Community Banking, 2007. The study looked at the north of Italy and the south of Italy. It questions why the north is so much better off economically than the south. It looks at presence of the mafia in the south, how industries have developed etc. The conclusion reached is that the one aspect that closely predicts the economic success in a community is the number of quality institutions in that community. They talk about sports clubs, churches, other religious institutions, the quality of the business community and business clubs and so on and so forth. They found there is a direct correlation between economic success in the community and the number and quality of institutions in the community.
